the theremin

The theremin was invented in 1919 by a Russian scientist, Lev Termen (later anglicized to Leon Theremin). Its most obvious and unique feature is that the instrument is played without touching it: the thereminist manipulates the electromagnetic fields surrounding two antennae through hand gestures. The left-hand antenna controls volume, while the right-hand one controls the pitch.
